City of Coquitlam – Director Major Capital Projects

ID: 24-1099 Location: Coquitlam, BC

Coquitlam has an opportunity for a qualified candidate to join its senior leadership team as a key member of the Parks Recreation Culture and Facilities department. The Director Major Capital Projects (“Director”) is responsible for managing the City’s major capital construction portfolio and offers an exciting opportunity for a candidate possessing in-depth knowledge of construction projects. This is an exciting opportunity to participate in the development of Coquitlam, a municipality striving to create innovative facilities to support its growing community. Reporting to the Director are two Senior Managers, as well as a team of PMs and unionized staff.

The Director will oversee large-scale projects to ensure that they are delivered on time and on budget. The Director will look forward to working on our upcoming Northeast Community Centre (Burke Mountain), the riverfront Fraser Mills Community Centre and a number of other exciting capital projects. With the support of a strong team within the department, as well as colleagues across other divisions in the City, the Director will oversee, lead and manage major parks and recreation facility projects, as well as major facilities upgrades. This will involve guiding the team and liaising with consultants, contractors, and others involved in the construction processes as it may relate to development, material selection, and cost negotiations on City-owned properties. Additionally, the Director will liaise frequently with our Finance and Procurement teams as well as the in-house Legal team on various contracts and agreements in respect to City-owned properties and capital projects, as well as external partnership projects.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced capital projects professional to oversee development projects that will transform the City, as well as an ongoing range of other initiatives. Besides leading the capital program for the Parks Recreation Culture and Facilities department, the Director will also implement project management best practices, policies, and procedures, to ensure a well-functioning PMO over time, and focus on team development and mentorship.
