The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (“DFO”) has established an Independent Third-Party Evaluator (“TPE”) role to provide technical assistance to the Pacific Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (“PICFI”) in its mandate to support and enhance the governance, management, administrative and operational structures and practices by BC and Yukon First Nation Commercial Fishing Enterprises (“CFE”). With a view to building capacity and ensuring long-term sustainability, the TPE will review and assess applications for PICFI Enterprise Development and associated projects for support from eligible CFEs.
The National Indigenous Fisheries Institute (“NIFI”) is a technical organization that is promoting consistency and standards across Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Indigenous programs, working with communities, regional organizations, and government agencies to maximize the potential of fisheries, aquaculture, oceans, and aquatic management programs and practices to benefit Indigenous Peoples and communities across Canada. NIFI supports program design and development with a strong commitment to working with Indigenous partners in a spirit of respect and reconciliation and as joint stewards of the environment.
The Skeena Fisheries Commission (SFC), funded by the Pacific Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (PICFI), focuses on fisheries management, science, and conservation. The SFC signatories are the First Nations with traditional territory in the Skeena drainage and the adjacent north coast of British Columbia. This includes the Gitxsan, Gitanyow, and Wet’suwet’en nations. The Commission, as directed by signatory First Nations, responds to management and access priorities relating to broad Indigenous interests in the fisheries resource.
