The Southern Chiefs’ Organization Inc. (SCO) is a community-driven regional First Nations organization established in 1999. It is governed and operated by an alliance of 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota southern Manitoba First Nations communities, and more than 80,000 citizens are represented by their Chiefs’.
These First Nations represent 10 percent of all First Nations people in Canada and collaborate to preserve and advance their inherent rights.
The SCO has a unique mandate to provide technical advice, regional coordination, and collaborative facilitation toward important initiatives for member communities. This mandate focuses on finding real solutions that can be implemented regionally and in each member First Nations. Whether it is creating custom childcare laws, restorative justice programs or its own health care system, the role of SCO staff and leadership is to make the aspirations of each member community a reality.
